Bio
Darren McNabb is a Toronto-based, self-taught photographer whose vivid, painterly images explore the expressive power of colour, light, and atmosphere. Specializing in travel, landscape, and city photography, he creates work designed to evoke excitement, curiosity, and a sense of adventure. After retiring from the business world, Darren chose photography as a new beginning—one that keeps him active, outdoors, and connected to the beauty he encounters while exploring the world. His practice began with a simple point-and-shoot camera on a trip to Europe and has since evolved into a dedicated pursuit of capturing memorable, emotionally resonant moments. Guided by an appreciation for bright hues and compelling compositions, Darren’s photographs celebrate discovery, movement, and the creative freedom that comes with following one’s passions.
Photographer Statement
This series presents Toronto and its surrounding landscapes through the lens of bold, expressive color. I’ve always felt a personal connection to the city, and living here has shaped how I see and respond to its light, its patterns, and its subtle rhythms. My goal is to highlight the viewpoints and details many people pass without noticing—those fleeting moments when the city reveals something extraordinary in the ordinary.
My style is deeply influenced by a love of bright, saturated hues, from vibrant sunrises to illuminated cityscapes. Some images are heavily retouched to enhance the atmosphere, while others remain close to how they were captured; what unites them is a painterly approach that uses lighting, color, and composition to create emotional impact. Rather than focusing solely on technical precision, I aim to instill a sense of excitement and adventure, inviting viewers into a version of Toronto that feels both real and slightly magical.
Through this work, I hope to encourage others to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the beauty woven into everyday spaces.
